In a study that involves 14 participants, researchers George Havenith and Lucy Dorman looked into the ability of anti-fatigue mats to reduce stress on the legs and feet after prolonged periods of standing.
The researchers had respondents stand on a concrete floor and anti-fatigue mats for 90 minutes every day, over a five-day period.
The results showed that standing on concrete flooring for 90-minutes can cause serious discomfort to the back, legs, and feet of the participants as well as stiffness in the shoulders and neck.
Participants who stood on anti-fatigue mats, however, reported ‘statistically significant’ benefits. These special mats helped respondents experience less of the symptoms experienced by those who stood on concrete floors, even if they stood for the same duration of time.
