PVC sits on every major Red List for good reason. Its lifecycle releases chlorine-based toxins, its plasticisers affect indoor air, and at end-of-life it’s almost impossible to recycle. For architects, facilities managers and operations leaders working to Green Star, WELL or ESG-led briefs, it’s the material that quietly undoes the work.
We’d love to tell you we’ve eliminated it. We haven’t — and we won’t pretend otherwise. Some matting applications still rely on PVC to perform safely and last the distance. What we have done is reduce it across our range, replace it with better materials wherever the performance holds up, and keep pushing our supply chain to give us more options every year.
This is where you’ll find the progress so far.
Entrance and safety matting sit where people, product and building meet. They’re walked on every day, they off-gas into the spaces occupants breathe, and because matting wears, it’s replaced far more often than the flooring around it. Across a portfolio, the material choice stops being a detail.
Healthier interiors. Reduced-PVC and PVC-free constructions mean fewer phthalates, fewer chlorine-based additives, and less plasticiser migration into indoor air.
Credentials that hold up. Lower-impact materials support Green Star, WELL and Living Building Challenge pathways, and give you cleaner documentation for ESG and Scope 3 reporting.
A genuine end-of-life. Our rubber-based matting uses recycled content, and MatTek’s take-back program diverts worn mats into secondary products — weed matting, outdoor non-slip, playground soft fall — instead of landfill.
Backed by certified process. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accredited manufacturing, with suppliers chosen on the same standards, including 100% solar-powered, carbon-neutral plants.
Every product in this category is PVC-free No greenwashing, no asterisks buried in the spec sheet.
If you need a material declaration, a sample, or help matching a product to a Green Star credit, MatTek’s specifier team works directly with designers across Australia.
Australian-owned, three generations in. Reducing what we can, replacing what we should, and honest about the rest.
